2014-2018 Dodge Sprinter High Clearance Front Bumper Kit

From: CAD$894.43

This is a high clearance DIY weld-together winch bumper kit for the post-facelift 2nd gen (2014-2018) Mercedes/Dodge Sprinter. It features a reinforced bolt-on design, protected winch mount, LED pod and 30" light bar mounts and excellent ground clearance. This bumper allows you to forget about approach angle and substantially improves the offroad capability of your Mercedes/Dodge Sprinter. It offers excellent protection from trail obstacles, animal strikes and distracted drivers and has been kept to a weight of 97lbs through careful design work. Trimming of the factory plastic bumper cover is required, however this is a cosmetic piece that is easily replaceable should you wish to return to the factory front bumper parts in the future. Absolutely no drilling, trimming or modification of the vehicle frame/chassis is required.

Description

Due to the construction of the front end of the Mercedes Sprinter van, there are only four tiny M8 factory bolt holes per side available to mount an aftermarket bumper. While this is totally inadequate for an offroad winch bumper, some aftermarket bumpers mount to the Mercedes Sprinter using only these mounting points! If a thick steel bumper is poorly mounted to the vehicle, no matter how strong the bumper is, it will simply fail at its mounting points should an impact or recovery pull occur. Instead, our engineers came up with intermediate mounting brackets that bolt to your Mercedes Sprinter’s main structural frame rails approximately 10″ back from the end of the frame. This is done using the six factory M12 mounting points already present on your Sprinter’s frame, meaning that this bumper requires absolutely no frame/chassis cutting, drilling or modification of any kind! The end result is a total of 14 mounting points between this bumper and your Mercedes sprinter van. While this is certainly overkill, it ensures that impact and winching forces are evenly distributed across your Mercedes Sprinter’s frame. As far as we know, this is by far the most serious winch bumper mounting system available for the 2014-2018 generation Mercedes Sprinter van and will ensure that you can rely on this bumper when you need it most.

The profile of this bumper has been designed with maximum ground clearance and approach angles put first. The bumper sits as high and tight to the front of the 2nd generation (2014-2018) Mercedes/Dodge Sprinter as possible, while the angled lower faces will smoothly slide over obstacles and ensure you do not get hung up on the trail. The side wings of this bumper wrap around to the front wheel wells and tie directly into the main frame mounting plates for true offroad protection. These side wings will take a serious hit without flexing or deflecting into the vehicle body. We know that most 4×4 Sprinter owners want to run oversized tires and more aggressive wheel offsets. This can create interference issues with the stock front bumper. We have thought ahead and specifically designed these bumper side wings to easily clear 35″ tires.

This bumper is also available with an optional lower skid plate that provides a smooth surface to slide across trail obstacles and protects your vulnerable engine bay parts. This is especially important on the Sprinter chassis, as the factory parts leave your engine oil pan and front differential totally exposed to mud and trail impacts. In fact, the Sprinter van that we had into the shop to design this bumper had this area packed full of dried mud that had to be chipped out! Our skid plate covers this area and is made from heavy duty 3/16″ steel or 1/4″ aluminum, ensuring that it can take the heavy trail hits and protect your expensive drivetrain and engine parts. This skid plate is fully CNC-bent into shape out of a single plate of metal and only requires two very small 1″ long welds to complete it.

The main section of this bumper is also CNC-bent out of a single piece of  3/16″ P&O Steel or 1/4″ aluminum. This greatly reduces the amount of welding and grinding required by you and makes for a cleaner finished product. If you are paying to have the bumper assembled by a welding shop, this significantly lowers the cost.

We finished this bumper off with two integrated light buckets for surface mount LED pod lights, a 30″ single row light bar mount (custom light cut outs available by request), an integrated winch mount to accept all standard 8-12k lb winches with removable solenoids, and heavy duty 9/16″ recovery points that are placed directly in line with the Sprinter frame to eliminate any leveraging effects. These recovery points are formed by laser cut steel plates that pass through the bumper shell and tie directly into the Sprinter frame as part of the bumper’s main mounting brackets. The recovery points then get welded to the in and outside of the bumper shell. These factors all combine to form recovery points that minimize stress on your Sprinter frame and provide reliable recoveries of heavily loaded vehicles in the worst of offroad situations. The low profile design has resulted in very reasonable weights of 97lbs for the steel bumper and 48lbs for the aluminum version. Considering that this bumper replaces your factory bumper and associated components, the resulting weight increase to your Sprinter is surprisingly minimal. This reduces added stress on your vehicle, maintains precious payload capacity, and allows you to keep your factory suspension if desired.

Other notable features include the optional grill and headlight protection hoops for increased wildlife protection and an optional front hitch receiver to allow a variety of recovery and gear carrying options. (available by custom request – please send us an email and we’d be happy to discuss further).

Bumper assembly

As for welding, with everything designed using CAD software and then CNC laser-cut to size, the pieces fit together perfectly and this makes for a very simple assembly process. All kits come with detailed instructions with plenty of clearly labelled diagrams that are made using cutting-edge CAD software. This bumper kit is well within the ability of a novice welder and many customers have purchased it as their very first welding project with great results! This is made possible by the clean parts fit-ups and thick material. These are two factors that make welding significantly easier. Welding is one of those skills that is easier to learn than you may think and once you can do it, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it. Alternatively, many individuals buy the kits and then have a local welder assemble it for them. Even in this case, it typically ends up being less expensive than buying a pre-fabricated bumper – especially after considering the lower shipping costs of our kits vs. fully assembled bumpers.
