All of your products are listed as weld together kits. What does this mean?

All our bumpers, skid plates and swing out carrier systems will arrive at your doorstep as weld together kits. This means that everything you need to assemble the product is provided to you along with very detailed instructions. You must then weld it together yourself using your vehicle as the jig to build it off of.

I am not a very experienced welder and don‘t know if I’m capable of assembling your products. How difficult are your products to weld together?

All of our bumpers are very simple to weld together and come with detailed instructions containing step by step guides and clear and concise diagrams. With all of the pieces CNC laser-cut and all mounting and accessory holes already perfectly positioned, everything fits together like a puzzle. Simply remove your stock bumper, bolt the provided mounting plates to your frame, and start assembling the bumper piece by piece, starting from the vehicle frame and working outwards. The vehicle and the pieces themselves act as guides so there is no need for specialty welding jigs or tools.

This bumper kit is well within the ability of a novice welder and many customers have purchased it as their very first welding project with great results! This is made possible by the clean parts fit-ups and thick material – two factors that make welding significantly easier. Welding is one of those skills that is easier to learn than you may think and once you can do it, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it. The possibilities that it opens up are endless.

In fact, long before I started Coastal Offroad, I designed and welded together the original prototype front bumper as my very first welding project (I am a mechanical engineer by trade). The welds were far from pretty but nearly 5 years later, that bumper is still installed on that 4Runner as a testament to how robust and user-friendly these weld-together kits are. After countless winch pulls and direct impacts with rock faces, the bumper continues to perform.

Alternatively, many individuals buy the kits and then have a local welder assemble it for them. Even in this case, it typically ends up being less expensive than buying a pre-fabricated bumper, especially after considering the lower shipping costs of our kits vs. fully assembled bumpers.

In the case that you do run into any issues or points of uncertainty while assembling  your bumper kit, email us at info@coastaloffroad.com and we will be more than happy to assist you!

What is the ‘Tubing’ Product Option?

Our front bumpers are available with three different tubing options. All tubing is precision CNC-bent and constructed from 1.66×0.100” ERW tubing (0.125” wall for aluminum)

No tubing – This gives you a clean, flat-top plate bumper with no tubing hoops in front of the grill or headlights.

Grill tubing – This gives you a bumper with a single tubing hoop in front of your grill. This is reinforced with CNC-cut gussets at its base for higher strength and a smoother transition between the bumper and tubing. This option does not include tubing hoops to go around your headlights

Full tubing – This gives you a bumper with tubing hoops in front of the grill and the headlights. To go along with this option, round holes will be pre-cut into your plate bumper top plates for the headlight hoops to pass through. This makes for easier fitment and the ability to weld the tubing to the top and bottom surfaces of your bumper’s side wings for maximum strength. This option gives your vehicle the maximum level of protection from trail obstacles and animal strikes. In addition, the side hoops can be seen from the driver’s seat, giving you a reference point for knowing exactly where the corners of your vehicle are. This benefit is seldom mentioned but is extremely helpful when navigating tight trails and parking lots. We can consistently come within 1” of objects without hitting them!

What is the ‘Body Lift’ Product Option?

The body lift option is only for if you have a body lift installed on your vehicle. If you have any type of suspension lift (coilovers, new shocks and coils, spacer lifts, etc) you will want to select the “no body lift” option. This is because while a suspension lift raises the entire vehicle together, a body lift only spaces the body off of the frame. Since our bumpers are mounted to the vehicle’s frame, a body lift will result in the bumper being left behind while the truck body moves upwards by the height of the body lift. This will result in a gap between the bumper and body. The 1″ body lift version of the bumper is designed to be 1″ taller to correct for this gap created by the body lift. To achieve this, we actually re-dimension the entire bumper to ensure a perfect fit and great proportions!

It is highly recommended to plan your bumper and body lift at the same time.

What is the ‘Material’ Product Option?

All of our bumpers are available in steel and aluminum.

Steel – Our steel bumpers are constructed out of 3/16” thick cold rolled steel. Steel provides high strength and durability and is easier to weld. It comes in at a pricepoint much lower than aluminum

Aluminum – Our aluminum bumpers are constructed out of ¼” thick 5052 aluminum. Aluminum provides great corrosion resistance and substantial weight savings over steel. While it is still very strong and durable, it will sustain dents and scratches easier than steel if you like to play hard in the rocks. Aluminum requires more specialized welding equipment and technique than steel.

What is the ‘Swing Out’ Product Option?

Many of our rear bumpers are available with single and dual swing outs to carry extra gear on your vehicle.

Single Swing Out – This option gives you a single swing arm with space to mount a full size spare tire and tabs suitable for mounting a hilift jack and other recovery gear. This swing arm spans roughly 2/3 of the width of the rear hatch/ tailgate. This option does not include our dual gan can holder.

Dual Swing Out – This option gives you two swing arms with space to mount a full size spare tire, hilift jack, and two 20L NATO gas cans. The gas can holder is lockable and is included with this option. The swing out arms use a 2/3 – 1/3 split to maximize gear-mounting options.

What is the ‘Year’ Product Option?

Many vehicle manufacturers will perform a mid-generation “facelift” on their vehicle models by changing the appearance of the front end. In some cases, this requires us to redesign our bumpers for optimum fitment. Select the model year range that your vehicle falls in.

What is the ‘Body Style’ Product Option?

This option refers to your vehicle’s trim level. Some models were/are available with optional fender flares from the factory. To account for this, we offer bumper versions that are widened to match the extra width created by these fender flares. This makes for a cleaner appearance and ensures that the bumper will contact obstacles before your fender flares do!

What is the ‘2" Hitch Receiver’ Product Option?

This option refers to a 2” hitch receiver. All of our receivers are designed to provide maximum strength and ground clearance. However due to the fact the welding is out of our control, these hitch receivers are not rated for on-road towing. They are only intended for hitch mounted accessories such as bicycle racks and for off-road use as a recovery point. However, most of our bumpers are designed with flat bottoms to maintain compatibility with the factory hitch receiver. This is the recommended solution for towing with vehicles that are equipped with our rear bumpers.

If you do not select ‘Yes’ for this option, your bumper will not come with any hitch receiver.

What is the ‘Quarter Panel Protection Hoops’ Product Option?

This option adds round tubing side hoops to your rear bumper. These are made from CNC-bent ERW round tubing and provide functional protection to the vulnerable rear quarter panels of your vehicle. They can also be used to mount additional lights or act as a step for accessing roof racks.

What is your refund/return policy?

Due to the facts that our kits are made to order, we cannot provide refunds or returns on transactions once an order is processed. This is the only way that we can provide our customers with the selection of customization options and short lead times that we do. Due to the DIY nature of our products, we cannot provide returns or refunds on kits that are assembled or installed incorrectly and it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that the kit is assembled correctly.
